SALSA Dancing

Taking its name from Spanish word for “sauce,” it is a globally well known and popular form of dance style and music. Hot and spicy, passionate and fun, salsa music originates from Cuba with a mix of Spanish and African beats. It has multiple styles and variations and before it got its name was mostly known as the hybrid of Cuban Son and Mambo. Popularity grew after 1970’s when it spread through New York. There are now other subgenres in pop, jazz, rock, R&B.

What is unique about salsa is that it is thought to represent the whole of Latin music, dance, passion and style without actually having a strong definition. Musicians may describe what they play as Cuban music, yet it is embraced by most of the Spanish speaking world. We can identify it as one form of Latin music that reflects the multicultural nations and has succeeded globally.
